"Don't bother to give God instructions; just report for duty." ~ Corrie ten Boom
We, dear SuperGals, are nothing if not consistently inconsistent.
In order to maintain our delusion, er, I mean illusion of control, we make plans and make lists and make plans for our lists and lists for our plans. We like to set our priorities, then go about the business of accomplishing.
Sitting down each evening to write tomorrow’s list, I would always ask myself, “What’s the most important thing I need to do tomorrow? The ONE thing I must not forget?” It might be returning a call to a client, or making an important doctor’s appointment. I would put everything I could think of on that list, with five-pointed stars placed next to my Must Do’s. The theory was that the star would ensure these items wouldn’t be overlooked.
But there was one thing that I never, ever put on that list, and that I never, ever forgot to do. I know, you’re all expecting me to say something righteous and angelic, right? Ummm, sorry to disappoint.
The very first thing each morning, while the sky was still dark and saner minds were still asleep, I would crawl into my car, bedhead and all, and drive with bleary eyes to buy my morning coffee.
Every morning. Without fail. Oh ho, never once did I forget to go get coffee, sister.
The top priority in this SuperGal’s oh-so-important life? Yep. A great big ol’ cup of hot Starbucks. Or Wawa. Or whatever java was my fave-of-the-month.
Pretty lame.
There were even times when I thought to myself, “If I go to sleep early tonight, the next thing I know, it’ll be time to go get my coffee!” Crazy, right? Sort of like when I was a little kid and went to bed early on Christmas Eve so Christmas morning would come faster.
Everything on my To Do list fell behind the coffee. And basically, well, fell behind.
Everything that cropped up during the day took priority over my list. It all seemed “right now” urgent.
My dial was always set to High. Loud. Fast. Accomplishing some things, yes, but never completing the endless list in my head.
What I never thought to do was ask God what I should do today. See, SuperGals, even those in Recovery, don’t feel a need to consult with others. They know how to do their thang and git it done.
Right.
But none of that was working for me anymore. The end of each day brought stress and resentment and angst.
Until the day my pastor, Reverend Hamlin, said, "If you're too busy to spend time with God, you're too busy!" That day, I made up my mind to STOP!
Surrender.Trust. Obey. Pray.
I figured the only way for this SuperGal to change my day and my way was to challenge myself to sit still each morning. No matter how many items were already on my To Do list.
Sit still to pray. To read God’s Word.
Sit still to ask, “What do You want me to do today, Lord?”
Sit still and wait for His answer. See what would happen.
So I listened. He told me. Eased my fears. Blessed me for my growing faith.
Bit by bit. Day by day.
See, if He had revealed all at once His plans for me, I would have freaked! Or laughed. Or something.
Write a book? When? How? Quit my job--retire early, with no other source of income? That’s insane!
Yet, here I am.
SuperGals, I’m challenging you to first S.T.O.P.
Surrender.
Trust.
Obey.
Pray.
Now go grab that Starbucks and get on with God’s awesome plan!
I love waking in the morning anticipating a sweet, special time communing with the Lord. The soul-quietness and peace that await me.
As for me, I will continue beholding Your face in righteousness (rightness, justice and right standing with You); I shall be fully satisfied when I awake [to find myself] beholding Your form [and having sweet communion with You.] ~ Psalm 17:15
